Hiroshi Wada received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Kyoto, the last for his research into deuterostome molecular phylogenetics under Noriyuki Satoh. He obtained a JSPS postdoctoral research fellowship to continue his work at the University of Kyoto, followed by a long-term fellowship from the Human Frontier Science Program to conduct studies at the University of Reading School of Animal and Microbial Studies from 1996-1998. He returned to Japan to take an assistant professorship at the University of Kyoto Seto Marine Biological Laboratory in 1998, and was recently appointed associate professor at the University of Tsukuba Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences.
